The Best Time to Elope in Colorado – a Guide to Every Season

Eloping in Colorado isn’t just about saying “I do” – it’s about feeling the crisp alpine air, soaking in golden hour mountain views, and creating a day that’s uniquely yours. The state is also adventure-ready year round, but the best time to elope in Colorado will depend on what you want to do, since each season brings something different.

This guide will tell you about each season in Colorado, to help you determine when the best time to tie the knot is for you!

Summer – The Best Time to Elope in Colorado for Hiking

July – September

Summer is the most popular time to elope in Colorado, because of the weather! It’s warm and sunny, and the days are long, so it’s the best time to go hiking, kayaking, and other outdoor adventures. This means that trails, especially in popular places like Rocky Mountain National Park, will have more people out and about, which can make it harder to find privacy for your ceremony.

Wildflowers bloom as the snow melts, and peak around mid-July, but the timing can vary year to year. One important thing to keep in mind is that snow can stick around in high alpine locations until mid-July, or even into August, so if you have some high elevation adventures in mind, it’s best to wait for August if you want the best chances of avoiding snow.

Another important thing to note is that mid afternoon thunderstorms are really common – they usually pass quickly, but if you’re planning to be in the mountains, it’s best to make sure you’re not up there during the storm.

Tips for Summer Elopements in Colorado

If you decide that the best time to elope in Colorado for you is summer, here are a few tips to keep in mind!

Avoiding Crowds

Since summer is so popular for outdoor adventures, and privacy is likely one of the big reasons you decided to elope in the first place, there are some things you can do to avoid big crowds. These apply any time of year, but are especially important in the summer!

First, sunrise is almost always going to be the quietest time, so opting for a sunrise ceremony is one of the best ways to ensure a little more privacy. There will be fewer people around, the light will be gorgeous, you can avoid those thunderstorms, and it’ll be a little cooler, which can be nice for hikes.

I also always recommend weekday elopements – weekends are always busier!

Wear Layers

If you’re hiking, temperatures can drop pretty quickly if you’re gaining elevation! That, along with the potential for thunderstorms, means it’s a good idea to pack some layers and be prepared for any weather.

What to Do When You Elope in the Summer

  • Hiking
  • Kayaking or paddleboarding
  • Rent a 4×4
  • Whitewater rafting
  • Camping or backpacking

Fall – The Best Time to Elope in Colorado for Golden Aspens

Late September – November

Fall in Colorado is stunning, with the leaves turning shades of red and yellow, and the golden aspens create a dreamy backdrop. The weather is crisp, and summer crowds start to disappear. Late September is usually the best time to see the aspens, but like wildflowers, it can depend on the year. Snow can start to accumulate in the mountains as early as October, so fall is often pretty short!

Tips for Fall Elopements in Colorado

If you want to elope in Colorado in the fall, here are some tips!

Prepare for Changing Weather

Summers in Colorado are pretty predictable – even though weather can change quickly, the thunderstorms are typically around the same time each day. Not so much as fall begins, because snowstorms can arrive unexpectedly. Mornings can be frosty, and you’ll definitely need to be prepared if you’re heading into the mountains.

Check Road Conditions and Be Flexible

Early snowfall has a big impact, since it can lead to road closures. Check the weather leading up to your elopement, along with road closure updates, and be prepared to change the plan if needed!

Things to Do in the Fall

  • Scenic drives
  • Wildlife watching – especially elk!
  • See the aspens
  • Soak in a hot spring
  • Fall festivals

Winter – The Best Time to Elope in Colorado for Snow

December – March

If you love the snow, and the idea of exchanging vows in a peaceful winter wonderland, winter might be the best time to elope in Colorado for you! Whether you want to hit the slopes or stay cozy in a cabin, the winter months can offer the perfect setting. Though winters in Colorado are cold and snowy, the days are often sunny! Winter may require some more careful planning, since you’ll need to be prepared for road closures, snow storms, and cold weather, but it can be so worth it.

Tips for Winter Elopements in Colorado

Winter requires more prep, so keep these tips in mind!

Prepare for the Cold

Of course, you’ll need to make sure that you’re ready for the cold weather. This means warm attire, but I also recommend hand warmers, thermal layers, wool socks, and a hot beverage.

Consider Accessibility

A lot of locations that are accessible in the summer may be much harder, if not impossible, to reach in the winter. Make sure the location you choose can work in the winter, and be prepared with a Plan B just in case. Bring any gear you may need, like snowshoes or skis.

Things to Do in the Winter

  • Snowshoe
  • Ski or snowboard
  • Snowmobile
  • Ice Climb

Spring – The Best Time to Elope in Colorado for Waterfalls

April – June

As the snow starts to melt, the waterfalls in Colorado are in full force! At lower elevations, there are some wildflowers blooming around late May, but at higher elevation, the snow usually sticks around until at least mid July. Spring is a good time for hikes or adventures at lower elevations, but some trails and mountain passes may still be closed.

Tips for Spring Elopements in Colorado

Prepare for Mud

Snowmelt can make a lot of the trails muddy, or create streams that you’ll need to cross. Waterproof boots are a must!

Wear Layers

Weather can be unpredictable, with some days being warm and sunny, and other days being cold and rainy. Bring layers with you, and waterproof gear!
