When Alyssa and Ryan told me they wanted a Chautauqua Park elopement in Boulder with their family, their dogs, and whatever the Colorado fall weather decided to throw at them, I was already sold. And then it rained. And honestly? This gallery might be some of my favorite work I’ve ever made.
There’s something about overcast weather at Chautauqua. The Flatirons go this moody, dramatic gray. The golden fall aspens pop even harder against the sky. And the meadow grass turns this rich, warm amber that catches every bit of soft light filtering through the clouds. You couldn’t plan that if you tried.

The Ceremony
Alyssa and Ryan gathered their family, friends, and two very enthusiastic dogs on the Chautauqua lawn. Clear bubble umbrellas were out. Bouquets of dusty blue and cream were held. And somewhere between the vows and the ring exchange, I watched everyone around them completely lose it — tears, laughs, the good kind of chaos that only happens when the people who know you best are the ones watching you get married.

After the ceremony, they signed their marriage license right there in the meadow while their golden retriever tried his absolute best to be part of the moment. (He was. He was very much part of the moment.)

After the “I Do’s”
Once the family photos were done and the dogs had calmed down (slightly), we broke away for portraits. The fall aspens along the tree line were absolutely glowing — that warm, impossible yellow that only lasts about two weeks a year in Colorado and makes you understand why people plan entire trips around it.

We wandered through the meadow with the Flatirons as a backdrop, the kind of backdrop that never gets old no matter how many times you shoot it. Alyssa’s gown trailed through the grass. Ryan dipped her and the whole thing felt like a movie. The light kept shifting in that perfect overcast way — no harsh shadows, just this even, dreamy glow across everything.
One of my favorite moments of the whole day was quieter than all of that — just the two of them, sitting in the grass with their dogs piled on top of them, completely forgetting I was there. That’s the one.

Why Chautauqua Works So Well for This
If you’re dreaming of a Boulder, Colorado elopement that lets you have your people there without sacrificing the feeling of something intimate, Chautauqua Park is genuinely one of the best options in the state. The lawn accommodates small ceremonies beautifully, the Flatirons are right there, and you’re five minutes from downtown Boulder if you want to go celebrate after.
You do need to plan ahead — Boulder Parks & Rec requires permits for ceremonies with guests, and parking can get busy. But when it comes together the way it did for Alyssa and Ryan, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be shooting.
